First things first. It was DARK in that cellar. So although I spent most of the night sniping candids with the 70-200 and the sb900 (Infrared Autofocus Assist is possibly the best thing ever), this seemed like a sweet opportunity to test out the low light capabilities of the 24 f/1.4. At ISO 1600, I was able to get shutter speeds around 1/20th of a second, which is acceptable for a wide angle lens. But at 1.4, the focus plane is so thin that it wasn't ideal for portrait shots, so when I started taking photos of those special moments, I turned on the flash and stopped down the aperture to about f/3.5. Not gonna lie, I still missed a few shots with the new lens. A lot of the photos came out pretty much the same with the 70-200, mostly tight crops of candid laughter and deep conversations. However, the 24 just adds a little bit of magic to every picture. Take a look for yourself! These photos were only with the new lens :)
Overall the party was very nice. It was catered with two remarkably enthusiastic Italian waiters, who accomodated even the the lowly photographer. I spent a lot of my time eating at the corner when I wasn't shooting because I had to protect my cheeks and my professionalism from those overly friendly grandmothers. The food left much to be desired, but the presentation was a big wow. Definitely one of the nicer events I've covered this year. A big happy 75th to Rachel!
